Johnny Brown

BOOKMAN CLOSED

US sitcom regular Johnny Brown’s career was inspired by a meeting with Sammy Davis Jr., who inspired Brown to pursue a multifaceted path (he sang in addition to acting). Davis repaid in kind by recommending Brown for a spot in sketch comedy juggernaut Laugh-In, where he ended up a routine presence in its later seasons and was noted for his Satchmo impression. His sitcom roles were typically in shows that explored African American life, with his most prominent in the form of oafish and corpulent landlord Nathan Bookman in Good Times. Bookman’s tenants were keen to lampoon him as “Buffalo Butt” or “Booger”, and they occasionally foiled attempts by him to evict them. With his own eviction aged 84, heavyset theme team Decomposing Blubber celebrates good times. Especially if anyone buys their book.
