Alan Ladd Jr.

THE RIGHT STIFF

In an alternate universe far far away, Star Wars would have never been a thing if Alan Ladd Jr. didn’t have faith in the project. The then-president of 20th Century Fox didn’t even understand the movie, but he liked George Lucas’ prior effort on American Graffiti and stood firm when greenlighting it against the opposition of many other executives. He shed tears of joy and vindication after witnessing the strong applause at its first public showing. The son of diminutive Western star Alan Ladd, the younger Ladd started off in Hollywood as a stuntman for his father before an accomplished career as an executive and producer. Among the other films he was involved with in a catalogue that accumulated over 50 Oscars included Alien, Blade Runner, The Right Stuff, Chariots of Fire, and Braveheart. His affable, easygoing demeanour made him widely liked in the industry and was seen as key to his career longevity. He was 84 and a unique hit for Star Wars crew Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy.
