French newsreader Jean-Pierre Pernault has signed off aged 71 following a lung cancer diagnosis. As host of lunchtime news programme the 13 Heures, his kindly-yet-confident presentation style and frequent emphasis on trivia drew a peak audience of 7-8 million. You can never fully discount a national treasure getting some sort of “nation mourns beloved X” write-up even if they were unknown beyond their backyard, and indeed the Times chose to cover France’s grief over the man most simply called “JPP”. The bold gamble is the first hit for memorably-named regular The Beatles Are Dying In The Wrong Order, an occasional dark horse that currently needs to find further ways to make up for not having Gary Burgess and friends…
