Dickey Betts

LORD, HE HAS DIED AN AMBLIN’ MAN

Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts has died aged 80. He was a touring circus guitarist before crossing paths with Duane and Gregg and co-founding the influential Southern rockers in 1969. Already key to the band – Duane once lavished “I’m the famous guitar player, but Dickey is the good one” on Betts – his prominence grew further after Duane’s 1971 death in a motorcycle crash. Some of the most iconic Allman Brothers Band pieces, including “Ramblin’ Man” and Top Gear theme “Jessica”, were Betts compositions. By 2000 he left the band after clashes over his alcoholism, and he continued to tour under his own outfit until recently. He was unique for Dead Beats, and leaves drummer Jaimoe as the last surviving co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band.
