Fay Weldon

THE DEATH OF A SHE-ANGEL

Author Fay Weldon has died aged 91. Her early advertising work saw her popularise the phrase “Go to work on an egg”, and she wrote the pilot episode of Upstairs, Downstairs. She was best known for her novels featuring, in her words, “overweight, plain women”, including Booker-shortlisted Praxis, Puffball, and her biggest hit The Life and Loves of a She-Devil. Of a strong feminist bent in her early works, in her later years provocative statements often put her at odds with the movement. Surprisingly unpicked entirely last year, mid-2022 reports of declining health comfortably landed her in the DDP corridors this time, with five picks.
