A CUNNING PICK
Astronaut Walter Cunningham has died aged 90. One of NASA’s earliest civilian astronauts, he was on the backup crew for the abortive Apollo 1, which ended in tragedy when a fire killed the main crew. NASA held off on manned missions for over a year, eventually resuming with Apollo 7, where Cunningham served as pilot. The first crewed mission of Apollo programme was seen as a key stepping stone to the eventual Moon landing. In his later years he was active in business and radio talk shows, with a hearty dollop of climate change denialism to the side. He was picked by three themes: both space teams, and time’s Ronnies (he was born Ronnie Walter Cunningham).
