William Klein

DEKLEIN

Photographer William Klein has died aged 96. Born in New York, he resettled in France after World War II. He was initially a painter under the tutelage of cubist Fernand Léger before a camera won at a poker game inspired a career shift. His gripping, wide-angle photos were noted for being among the first to depict models outside a controlled studio environment. His photo diary Life is Good & Good For You in New York, a raw perspective of his hometown, was popular in Europe and intrigued Federico Fellini, though the States were hesitant to publish due to its unglamorousness. Klein assisted Fellini on Nights of Cabiria before becoming a director in his own right, mostly of satires and documentaries. He was a unique for Grobler’s Stiff Ones.
