Shirley Hughes

UP AND UP

Prolific children’s author and illustrator Shirley Hughes has died aged 94. Her primary focus was stories about preschoolers its audience could relate to, with her two most successful works being the Alfie series, which featured a young boy and occasionally his younger sister, and Dogger, a story about a child losing and regaining his plush dog that was inspired by a lost gift for Hughes’ son. Fears that her works would be too English to succeed elsewhere were quelled by Dogger’s international success, with the travails of losing a plush proving relatable to toddlers worldwide and translated into over a dozen other languages. She was picked by two teams.
