RALPH CRAMMED IN

Character actor Ralph Ahn hailed from a family venerated in Korean American culture. His father Ahn Changho was the early 20th century’s preeminent voice of Korean independence, elder brother Philip Ahn was the first Korean American of note in Hollywood and one of the most familiar Asian faces of his era, and sister Susan Ahn Cuddy was the first Asian American in the US Navy. Ahn was inspired by his trailblazer relatives, following Philip into acting. After a long hiatus beginning in the early 60s, his career resumed in the 80s and culminated with his best-known role, that of taciturn grandfatherly figure Tran in six episodes of New Girl. Now that Tran’s rites have been read aged 95, Past Picks and Future Picks reaps the unique reward.
