MINCO DINCO DOOM

At first glance, when I see “103-year old Dutch writer dies” I assume it’s some WEP List of the Lost filler who only got a Wikipedia page five months ago. Marga Minco, one of the last surviving firsthand Holocaust writers and something of an Anne Frank who survived, was a little more reputed than that.

She was working as a journalist in the early 1940s when the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands halted her career, and nearly her life. The rest of her family perished in concentration camps, and she survived by going into hiding under an assumed name. Her literary debut, Bitter Herbs, aimed to keep her family’s memory alive by telling their stories through a series of sparse diary entries from young Marga’s lenses. She wrote dozens of books from there, typically invoking her wartime experiences, and was a unique pick for Dr Shipman’s waiting room.
