James L. Buckley

UNBUCKLED

Given its reputation as a dinosaur exhibit, the US Senate rather surprisingly only boasts four centenarians from its former ranks. The fourth, James L. Buckley, was the first to hit 100 in over 20 years. Buckley belonged to a prominent conservative family (his younger brother was National Review founder William F. Buckley) and won his New York seat in 1970 in a three-way race that ousted the Rockefeller Republican incumbent. Though Buckley was technically a member of the Conservative third party, he was a de facto Republican senator: Advocating for embryos to be declared people, successfully arguing for the Supreme Court to relax campaign finance laws, and kicking puppies. He lost reelection and was later a Reagan judicial appointee. He was picked by Dead Ringers and OAPs.
