Al Quie

LAST DRINK FOR THIS AL QUIE

Al Quie is the second Republican politician born in 1923 to die in recent days. Everything come in threes, Henry? Quie was elected to Minnesota’s 1st congressional district in 1958, and gained a reputation as a moderate Republican who voted for LBJ-era landmarks such as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. He successfully ran for Governor of Minnesota in 1978, but declined to run for reelection after a budget crisis tanked his popularity. With his death aged 99, there’s only one living US Representative first elected in the 1950s (Iowan Merwin Coad), and the oldest living governor becomes some Georgian peanut farmer. Al Quie was bottled up by Time for Me to Fly.
