Ian Hamilton

SCONE COLD

Scottish nationalist, lawyer and Stone of Destiny tug-of-warrer Ian Hamilton has died aged 97. Centuries after the stone was moved from its native Scotland to Westminster Abbey, Hamilton and three other students concocted the plan in 1950 to return the cultural relic to its homeland in an effort to rekindle Scottish identity. It was not a seamless task – the stone broke in two as they removed it from its chair and a freemason had to repair it – and the stone resided in Arbroath Abbey for a year before police found it and returned it to Westminster. The mission was a success in the long term, having ignited Scottish national fervor and eventually leading to the stone returning to Scotland in 1996 (though it’ll briefly be back in Westminster for when Charlie gets coronated this May). Less successful was when, as a young lawyer, Hamilton refused to swear allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II because doing so acknowledged Queen Elizabeth I, who never ruled over Scotland. He argued this in court to no avail. He was a unique for Dead By Dawn.
