Gordon Pinsent

AWAY FROM HIM

Canuck acting veteran Gordon Pinsent is due south aged 92. He had been an ever-present face in Canadian (and the occasional US) media for the past fifty years, with roles of note including the lackadaisical lead in The Rowdyman, the ghost dad in comedy-drama Due South, the US president in cult sci-fi thriller Colossus: The Forbin Project, and a latter-day voice of Babar the elephant. Arguably his finest moment came in independent drama Away from Her, where he plays an old man whose Alzheimer’s-stricken wife forgets about him and falls for another nursing home resident. The role came with extra poignancy for Pinsent as his own wife died of emphysema months before.

Known for his class with a dash of wily humour, he made something of a meme in 2010 when dramatically reading Justin Bieber’s autobiography. Known as “Porky” in his childhood, him bidding “that’s all folks” marks a unique joker hit for Rushing to Tim Horton’s for Maple Donuts.
