Walter Mirisch

IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT

Hollywood production great Walter Mirisch has died aged 101. He founded independent production company The Mirisch Company in 1957 alongside his elder brother and half-brother, and from there one can lose count of the classics one bumps into with the Mirisch name attached. Among them are Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, The Magnificent Seven, West Side Story, The Pink Panther series, and In the Heat of the Night. He won the Best Picture Oscar through Mr. Tibbs, and his stature as both a producer and human being was such that the Academy also bestowed upon him both the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. He made the final cut for seven teams.
