Actress Doreen Mantle has died aged 97. After an extensive stage career that won her an Olivier Award, wider recognition came in her late 60s in the shape of Jean Warboys on One Foot in the Grave. The naïve friend of Margaret was a surprise savant at board games and a frequent punching bag for Victor Meldrew’s short fuse, to hilarious results. Among highlights such as delivering Victor a gorilla suit and choosing a wax replica of herself over a cash prize, Mantle recounted her funniest Warboys moment as when she “was rolled down a hill and mounted by a dog”. Seven teams, including Are You Still Dying, Darling? and Lard Bazaar, don’t believe it.
