Pioneering actor Louis Gossett Jr. has died aged 87. Active from his teens and known for his commanding roles, he won early Broadway acclaim for A Raisin in the Sun and bagged an Emmy for the groundbreaking Roots. For his performance as no-nonsense Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in romdram An Office and a Gentleman, he became the first black actor to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Off the screen, he dedicated much of his time to fighting racism. He also was invited to Sharon Tate’s home the day of her murder, escaping a grisly fate by taking a shower at his home first! In ailing health for years, he was picked by Captain Hemlock’s Twenty and From Here to Eternity.
