Carmen Herrera

END OF HERRERA

Cuban-American painter Carmen Herrera, who has died aged 106, waited even longer than Grandma Moses to gain widespread recognition. Unlike Moses, who hadn’t painted at all until she was 78, Herrera was 11 years older and deep into a decades-long career when she sold her first piece. Both her gender and Hispanic heritage were longtime obstacles to her accruing public notice at an earlier age. Her abstract works, which were noted for their sharp lines and bold colours, were influenced by the Bauhaus school, the architecture of vintage DDP favourite Oscar Niemeyer, and various artists she met while living in Paris. These pieces received warm critical reception once the critics were finally aware, and are now a mainstay of art museums. Two teams, including an artsy theme, put their first points on the canvas.
