Jack Smethurst

SMET-HEARSE

UK film and TV regular Jack Smethurst has died aged 89. His career began with a bit part in the first Carry On movie, and acted in various films and sitcoms before assuming his best-known part as racist union leader Eddie Booth in sitcom Love Thy Neighbour. The basic premise featured Eddie Booth struggling to get along with his black neighbour, and the two men frequently traded barbs with one another. It was popular during its run but most see its more slapdash attempts at tackling racism as often both-sidesy and having aged like milk. Smethurst’s acting career continued more intermittently in subsequent decades, with his final roles including appearances in Corrie and Casualty. He was picked by two teams.
