GOAL BE SCORED

Golfer Bob Goalby has died, aged 92. In a career with 11 PGA championships, his best-known moment was winning the 1968 Masters Tournament, most notable for the peculiar circumstances in which he narrowly beat Roberto De Vicenzo. At the end of the round, Goalby finished with 65, one stroke better than De Vicenzo’s 66. The plot twist was De Vicenzo’s playing partner mistakenly marked the 17th hole as a par rather than a birdie. The correct result would have meant a tie, and led to a playoff.

De Vicenzo put his John Hancock on the scorecard before realising the error, and golf sportsmanship rules dictated that no changes could be made to a scorecard after the player signs it. Thus, Goalby won outright. De Vicenzo’s subsequent “What a stupid I am!” remark became a classic line in golf circles, and it was unfortunate for Goalby as well, whose fine performance would be perceived as an asterisk. Goalby was sympathetic to De Vicenzo, spending the aftermath consoling rather than gloating, and they remained good friends until the latter’s death in 2017.

A unique hit for golf theme In The Hole!, the scorecard for Goalby is below. Uniques are still 3 points, right? Go ahead and sign, In The Hole…
