THROW DOWN THE GAGE

Judge William Gage has banged his last gavel aged 85. He was best known as the stoic arbiter of the sensational Jill Dando murder trial, in which Barry George was convicted though overturned on appeal years later. After his retirement he chaired a public inquiry into the abusive killing of Iraqi national Baha Mousa at a British Army base. A unique hit, he gets Gooseberry Crumble off the ground.
