Terry Venables

EL TEL NOW NIL

Venerated footy manager Terry Venables has died aged 80. “El Tel” was England’s most popular manager since the glory days of Alf, memorably taking the team to the 1996 Euro semis. His career began as a player with Chelsea, where he won the League Cup, and crisscrossed through Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers before hanging up his player boots in favour of management. Known for his more modern strategies and his love of his players, early feats pre-Euros included taking Barcelona to their first Spanish league title in over a decade. Outside of footy he was a singer who attempted multiple times to cash in on the World Cup, and wrote several detective novels that were adapted into the ITV series Hazell. His radio silence during his 80th birthday celebrations would’ve led to a more popular pick next year, instead he’s a hit for Lord Football’s Usual List of Ill People and Manuel’s Stiffs.
