LOIS SLAIN

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the angel of death! Phyllis Coates remains best known as Lois Lane in season one of 50s series The Adventures of Superman, notable as the Man of Steel’s first TV outing. She previously portrayed the plucky reporter in the film Superman and the Mole Men. After being replaced by Noel Neill for the second season onward, Coates tried distancing herself from Superman through a string of B-movies (Girls in Prison, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein) and TV Westerns (The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke). She ultimately accepted her pop culture fate and played Lois’s mum in 90s romdram Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, though history repeated itself and she was replaced by another actress after her debut episode. Coates was 96 and comes to the rescue for three teams.
