CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH THE REAPER
Actress Melinda Dillon has been abducted from life aged 83. Her two best-known turns were as mums – first as the mother to a child abducted by aliens in Spielberg UFO classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which earned her an Oscar nomination, and then as the mother to the BB gun-longing narrator in Yuletide perennial A Christmas Story. She was also noted for her appearances in Paul Newman flicks Slap Shot and Absence of Malice (the latter garnering her second Oscar nom), Bigfoot comedy Harry and the Hendersons, and Streisand drama The Prince of Tides. Holiday-tinged Last Christmas won’t be shooting their eye out.
