John Morris of Aberavon

MORRIS DEVOLVES

Former Labour minister John Morris has died aged 91. Elected to represent the Welsh seat of Aberavon in the 1959 election, he was one of the few ministers to bridge the Wilson/Callaghan and Blair governments. As Welsh secretary under Wilson and Callaghan, he unsuccessfully pushed for Welsh devolution but sowed the seeds for the eventual formation of the Sennedd in 1999. Under Blair’s watch he served as Attorney General and navigated through the Kosovo War. He ascended to the House of Lords shortly thereafter, and his death leaves Stratton Mills as the last surviving MP to be first elected in the 50s and no surviving Wilson cabinet members. Three teams picked him, including Diana Rots.
