Jean Boht

BROWN BREAD

Actress Jean Boht has died aged 91. A longtime stage actress, she became better known for TV roles such as drama Boys from the Blackstuff and short-lived Britified Golden Girls adaptation The Brighton Belles. Her biggest success was as acerbic, domineering matriarch Nellie Boswell in working-class sitcom Bread, which was popular enough to last seven seasons but also saw its reputation grow mouldy with its Thatcherist depiction of poor Liverpudlians. In recent years she was resident of deadpooling motherlode Denville Hall, and outlived her husband, composer Carl Davis, by a month. Three teams make some bread.
