Bud Grant and Otis Taylor

OTIS, YOU WANT A TREAT AT THE VIKING FUNERAL?

NFL coach Bud Grant has died aged 95. He was the most successful coach in Minnesota Vikings history, with a 158-96-5 total to his name. Pivotal to this success was the “Purple People Eater” defensive line, presumably named as such because all his players had one eye, one horn, and flew. He took the team to four Super Bowl appearances (a first for an individual NFL coach) but didn’t win once.

That first loss, in 1970, was clinched by a touchdown scored by Kansas City Chiefs stalwart Otis Taylor, who has likewise died aged 80. Wide receiver Taylor formed a mean double threat for the Chiefs in tandem with teammate Len Dawson (who died seven months ago so I won’t need to cram him into this obit as well). Parkinson’s and dementia struck in 1990, and he had been a bedridden husk for years until finally slipping away.

Grant was a unique for newcomer Death to the Future, while Taylor was picked by 2018 podium placer Deceased Hose and debutant Faucheuse’s main list.
