Muhammad Rafiq Tarar

TARAR-A BOOM-DE-AD

Pakistani jurist and former president Muhammad Rafiq Tarar has died aged 92. A justice on the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the early 90s, he later was elected president in 1997 off the back of the endorsement of close friend and then-PM Nawaz Sharif. His presidency was marked by weakening the power of the office (largely in reaction to the iffy optics of a former Supreme Court justice serving as president) and a fractious relationship with General Pervez Musharraf that ended as well as you’d expect – Tarar was forced to resign a couple years after Musharraf’s 1999 coup. He was a unique hit for Complications from a fall.
