Julia Reichert

DOCUMENTARY SEDIMENTARY

Documentarian Julia Reichert has died aged 76. Her first doc, Growing Up Female, is preserved by the US National Film Registry, and in the decades since she and husband Steven Bognar produced Oscar-nominated works focusing on the midwestern middle class. One of these documentaries depicted the closing of an Ohio GM factory, and follow-up American Factory, where the factory was reopened by an anti-union Chinese billionaire to produce windshields, won her the long-yearned Oscar in 2020. Her victory came against the backdrop of a stage 4 cancer battle that David Quantick’s Showbiz Pals noted down, picking her last year. Banana’s Peel Slippers, Pan Breed, and The Love Boat are among the beneficiaries, but most crucially, Spade kept her, marking the “I’ve seen enough” moment for the 2022 contest.
