GONE WITH A VENGENACE

Premature obituaries are not uncommon, but it’s a little more peculiar for most of the UK tabloids to run with a death hoax (of which only The Mirror mea culpa’d) and then forget the person existed once they actually died. Though in fairness, Carmen Sevilla forgot she existed too. Hailing from Spain, Sevilla was a decade into her film career when Oscar-nominated Vengeance put her on the map. Though she made occasional forays into the English-speaking world (Biblical epic King of Kings, a Charlton Heston version of Antony and Cleopatra), her stardom largely remained in Spain and she segued to a second wind as a popular TV presenter. Alzheimer’s put a stop to all that, first leading to her death aged 89, and then her actual death aged 93. She was unique for A Submarine Torpedoes and Sinks The Love Boat.
