Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi

AL-QURASHI QUASHED

ISIS’s heyday of their grisly killings dominating the news feels a distant memory, with most of us barely remembering they exist nowadays. Look no further than the contrast between Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his successor Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi. al-Baghdadi had perhaps the highest name recognition of a terrorist since the days of bin Laden, with him occasionally on the cusp of becoming a Drop 40 pick. By the time he died in 2019, ISIS was old hat and new leader al-Qurashi was so unknown that there was speculation he might’ve been fabricated by ISIS in attempt to raise morale. His more low-key approach to terrorism didn’t help matters – while al-Baghdadi emphasised his battlefield prowess, al-Qurashi’s approach was more scholarly, using religious writings to rationalise ISIS’s atrocities. All in all he was never going to have the star power al-Baghdadi once did in the deadpooling sphere, though he made a similar exit to his predecessor – detonating a suicide vest while barricaded by children rather than letting the US forces capture him. Now that ISIS has finally acknowledged his death over a month after its occurrence, kudos to Carkers Convention 2022 for remembering ISIS was a thing, with a universally-welcomed jackpot 17 points that may well be a useful counterbalance to a handful of his centenarian picks.
