The summer begins to shine for the northern hemisphere, though our five hits this week sadly won’t be around to enjoy it:
Film
George Eastman/Luigi Montefiori was an Italian actor and screenwriter known for spaghetti westerns and Italian B-Movies. His near seven foot height made him a natural pick for “bad guy” roles and he’s most famous for Antropophagus from 1980. He also did Porno Holocaust one year later but that was cruelly forgotten by history. The giant in stature, if not international fame, scores ten points for Harry Rotter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Politics
Nobility by birth and chartered accountant by trade, Robin Bridgeman, 3rd Viscount Bridgeman has become the final hereditary peer in the House of Lords to die in office at the age of 95. He initially entered the upper house the old fashioned way after his father died, vacating the seat and title. Tony Blair first tried to reform the Lords in 1999, pointing out that the rest of the civilized world had mostly done away with inheriting power centuries earlier, though Bridgeman was one of the ninety peers elected to keep his place in the Lords as a compromise. With the current government finally killing off the last lingering aristocratic elements of our upper house I’m sure we can all rejoice that it’s now just, erm, meritocracy and theocracy instead. Democracy? Don’t be so ridiculous.
Television and Radio
Michael Keating was best known for playing Vila Restal in the BBC cult classic Blake’s 7, the only character to appear in every episode across it’s four seasons. Eastenders fans might be more likely to recognize him as recurring character Reverend Stevens. Topical trivia, also starred in an episode of Yes Minister titled “The Death List”!
Also saying goodbye this week was Judith Chalmers, renowned presenter of middle-class daytime television and radio such as Woman’s Hour, Come Dancing, and Wish You Were Here?. She was also the “Chief Smile Officer” for Heathrow airport in recent years, and speaking from my one experience of that hellhole while she had this job, I can assure you she wasn’t very good at it.
Finally, it’s radio silence for Emma Britton, a local breakfast radio host for BBC Radio Bristol, and later Radio Somerset. The end of her lung cancer battle scores a week high nine points for several of the DDP contenders from years gone by including Ethnic Cleansing, Dead Wait and ARSE-IN-HOLE.
