Crime
Gooseberry gets one of their unique hits with Australian crime family matriarch Kath Pettingill. “Granny Evil” started out her career as a barmaid and whore, before getting a promotion to brothel manager. While she managed to keep her own criminal record to a few drug smuggling and prostitution charges, her brood of ten children have racked up a notorious record of murder, drug and gang related convictions. She was shot in the head in 1978 leaving her with a glass eye to really complete the look of a deranged monster and ended up outliving three of her kids. Somehow making it to 91 and dying of natural causes, she’s the first nine points for Blueberry Crumble.
Film
Abbe Lane was an actress, singer and all round sex bomb who came to notice in the 1950’s starring in westerns and crime noir films from the era. She also worked in Italian cinema before moving on to television later in her career. She died off the radar back in April but the news has broken now and Pearly Gates get their second unique hit of the year for nine points.
Politics
The first Republican woman elected to the House of Representatives for Texas, Kay Granger, has also passed away at the age of 83. An opportunist to the bone, she was one of many Republicans to initially oppose Trump’s run for the presidency in 2016 but quickly fell in to line once he came to power, reversing her previous support for abortion rights in the process. At least she stayed true to her already rampantly homophobic beliefs.
She was also the first woman elected to chair the House of Appropriations committee, serving for a year before health problems caught up with her. Despite disappearing from public life in July 2024, she didn’t step down from Congress and when it transpired that she was representing her constituents while battling Alzheimer’s and living in a care home it caused a bit of a backlash to say the least. She scores six points for four teams.
Television and Radio
James Mulgrew, aka “Jimmy Cricket” was a comedian who started out on the summer camp circuit before breaking in to television in the 80’s. Deriving his stage name from the famous Pinocchio insect, he was well known for his distinctive hat, tailcoat and wearing his shoes on the wrong feet. Sounds hilarious. His TV appearances included The Good Old Days, Crackerjack and his own show And There’s More, before later moving in to radio. He was also a huge charity worker and devoted family man so it’s a big judgemental frown along with the six points for Dai YaB’stards and comedy theme team Laugh until… 2026.
Wrestling
Funk wrestling dynasty member Dory Funk Jr. was mostly associated with the NWA and AJPW, also having a brief spell in the WWF in 1986. He held the NWA world heavyweight belt for four and a half years, the second longest spell on record. He later set up the wonderfully named “Funking Conservatory” wrestling school. He was also a one time rival of dead pooling hot commodity Abdullah the Butcher, time will tell if they’ll be grappling again soon!
