1960’s pop artists continue to have a bad year as Peter Max joins David Hockney and Yayoi Kusama in putting down the paintbrush for good. His work was known for vibrant colour and psychedelic imagery, and depicted subjects ranging from butterflies and flowers to a series of portraits of the Statue of Liberty. He got very wealthy from his work, though fame also found him in the 90’s for being indicted on tax fraud, and he was later accused of embezzling millions out of a trust fund he and his late wife were the guardians of. His being such a “Peter” when it came to money seems apt given that his name led to his joker pick by the male genitalia-themed Complete Phallusies, scoring twelve points.
Fashion
Bob Mackie, the “Sultan of Sequins” was a costume and fashion designer who won much acclaim over his career for the dazzling designs he produced. On screen and stage he was well known for working on projects such as The Carol Burnett Show, G.I.T on Broadway and multiple Cher productions. He also boasted a client list including Tina Turner, Liza Minelli and Barbie! He’s died following hospitalization for pneumonia at the age of 87 and scores six for both Huddled Masses and as the second Bob to fall for BOBBING FOR APPLES.
Film
Famed Nollywood actor (no, I didn’t know that was a thing either) Olu Jacobs starred in several British TV series in the 1970’s, including The Goodies, The Tomorrow People and The Professionals. He went on to star in over 100 movies after returning to Nigeria, winning many accolades in the process. Rumours of his death in 2021 proved premature after he turned up at a ceremony to accept a lifetime achievement award, but he went public with a Lewy Body Dementia diagnosis shortly after, and it now pays off for The Marvelous Pneumonia Squad for ten points.
Politics
Jon Kyl followed his father John into politics and served as both a Congressman and later Senator for Arizona from 1987 to 2013. He made a brief return when appointed to fill the seat following the death of John McCain in 2018 before stepping down again for Martha McSally.
Kyl was a fairly big name for the Republicans and led both their policy committee and conference for a time before being elected as the Senate Minority Whip. Policy wise, he hated poor people getting subsidized healthcare, thought working over the Christmas holidays should only be done by the working class and went frothing at the mouth the moment anybody mentioned abortion. The truth is probably a bit more nuanced than that, but much like his 2011 comments about Planned Parenthood it wasn’t intended to be factual. Kyl announced a dementia diagnosis right at the death of 2025 and it’s taken him down at the age of 84. Three teams score six.
Television and Radio
A pair of small screen actresses to wrap the week. Sheila Kennelly departed first and started out on stage in her native Australia before moving on to television in the late 60’s. She was best known for playing original character Floss McPhee in Home and Away before being written out after the first year. A stroke leaves her Gone and Away indeed, for ten points.
Stephanie Cole was best known for playing Dr. Bea Mason in the bleak but absolutely cracking Tenko in the 1980’s. She went on to regular roles in Open All Hours and sequel Still Open All Hours, Doc Martin and Coronation Street and numerous guest and recurring roles across various British telly staples. She somehow managed to avoid all three of Casualty, The Bill and Doctor Who though! Cole retired a few years ago due to an Alzheimer’s diagnosis and now scores for three teams. Are You Still Dying, Darling? benefit the most, squeaking into the top 100 on the board.
