John “Judo Jack” Hearn was a World War II veteran whose dodgy eyes meant he couldn’t be trusted with a rifle. Fortunately accuracy wasn’t all that important for the machine gunners so he was trusted with a Bren LMG, though only as the rear-most operator of any given convoy! After the war he got into Judo and went on to become the oldest verified Judo instructor in the world, still giving lessons into his hundredth year. His final accolade came this year in the form of a British Empire Medal at 102, one of the few remaining times it could likely be awarded to anybody who actually served while said empire still existed. It’s a unique hit for A Question of Sprouts that brings them up to twelfth place on the theme board.

It’s also time for a requiem for operatic soprano Martina Arroyo. She was one of the first black women to crack the color barrier in opera, first having been enrolled at Hunter College as a teenager before later becoming one of the renowned vocal coach Marinka Gurewich’s students. After breaking on to the scene in Europe she would go on to a huge career worldwide, being most associated with the Zurich and Metropolitan operas. A total unknown to most competitors, it’s her 2013 Kennedy Center Honor that nets her nine points as a unique hit for The Dead Kennedys, who jump to 17th on the theme board.

Television and Radio

Rounding off this rather quiet week is cult actor Michael Forest, who was best known for guest roles in series such as Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. He had an extensive career in anime dubbing and Hollywood too, being one of Roger Corman’s go-to actors for many of his long list of B Movies. The most popular pick this week, with a whopping two teams scoring five points. MST3K Massacre clearly remembered The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent more than anyone else did.
