Doug Cowie

DOUG HIS GRAVE

Oldest living Scottish international footballer Doug Cowie has died aged 95. Cowie played over 350 matches for Dundee between 1945 and 1961, and turned Dundee into a solid defensive unit, who came within a point of winning the Scottish league title in 1949. They also got to the 1952 Scottish Cup final, where they lost 4-0 to a rampant Motherwell side. Some league cup wins did follow, however, and Cowie played in the Scottish team that qualified for the 1958 World Cup finals. It is the irony of his career that after 16 seasons with Dundee, he left to become the player-manager of Morton, and that very season, Dundee finally won the league title without him. In later life a scout for Dundee United, and briefly a manager for Raith Rovers, Cowie was the last surviving member of the 1954 and 1958 World Cup squad, and one of the few living Scots to have played at multiple World Cups. He was a unique pick for Sudden Death.
