Stephen Sondheim

A LITTLE NIGHT MOURNING

One of the most famous American composers of the 20th Century, Stephen Sondheim has died at the age of 91, somewhat surprisingly for a man many pegged as a future centenarian. Sondheim wrote the lyrics for the songs in West Side Story, and went onto write some of the most popular musicals of all time, including A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The winner of 8 Tony Awards, Sondheim also won an Oscar and multiple Grammies, including one for the song Send in the Clowns, but he never completed the EGOT set with an Emmy. In fact, the Emmys never nominated him for a single award. Sondheim was still working at the time of his death, and in recognition of his contributions, the lights at West End theatres were turned off for a minute in tribute. He was picked by 7 teams, including Error 404s, Super Squirrels and Alliteratively Alive No More.
