COAL MINER’S SLAUGHTER

Grand old lady of country music Loretta Lynn has died aged 90. The news comes days after a tabloid claimed she was planning her funeral, only for the tabloid to bungle this flukey dart by insisting she wasn’t at deaths door. Born to an impoverished coal-mining Kentucky family and married in her teens in what would be an oft-abusive relationship, she often drew on her humble upbringing for her songwriting. Her tough-as-nails everywoman style was a refreshing contrast to the meek housewife image typical of most country women before her, and dominated the US country charts with hits like “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)”, “One’s on the Way”, and a bunch of duets with Conway Twitty.

Lynn’s depiction of hot-button topics such as divorce drew ire from the God-bothery radio stations that typically adored her, and birth control celebration “The Pill” was banned by many of them. “Coal Miner’s Daughter” became her signature song, lending its name to her autobiography and the Oscar-winning Sissy Spacek film. She turned her ranch into a tourist attraction, released cookbooks, and continued to record music into her old age. However the pinnacle of her career was doing a guest spot on The Muppet Show where she sings with Rowlf and babies while Kermit hosted the show at a train station in lieu of the regular theatre. All aboard for 18 teams, among them Deathlist.net, JoeRam, SHORTER OF BREATH, ONE DAY CLOSER TO DEATH and naturally Blueberry Crumble, who automatically considers this year a Code Red enema by virtue of losing Loretta!
