Whiskered, sandy-haired cowboy actor L. Q. Jones has died aged 94. Born Justus McQueen, he liked the name of his character in debut film Battle Cry so much he nicked it for his own career. After acting in a string of WWII films, Sam Peckinpah corralled Jones into his stable of regulars for his numerous Western classics, with The Wild Bunch, Ride the High Country and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid among the Peckinpah films utilising Jones. On TV, Jones likewise was most comfortable in Westerns and also had a memorable bit as an all-Murrican RV and guns dealer in the last episode of the original Columbo run. At the rate Columbo alumni are going this year, someone better check up on Peter Falk. Jones also directed post-apocalyptic sci-fi flick A Boy and His Dog, a Harlan Ellison adaptation that later inspired the Mad Max film series.
