Barbara Thompson

COLLAPSE-EUM

Jazz saxophonist Barbara Thompson has died aged 77. Initially pursuing a classical path, her admiration of John Coltrane and Duke Ellington rerouted her to jazz. From there she founded several jazz/rock ensembles in the 70s, and often worked in collaboration with her husband, Colosseum drummer Jon Hiseman. She made guest appearances on albums by Colosseum and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and composed the theme and incidental music for A Touch of Frost. Thompson struggled with Parkinson’s for the final quarter century of her life and though she still made the occasional appearance on stage in the mid 2010s, after her hubby’s 2018 death her health declined to the point of appearing in a 2020 episode of 24 Hours in A&E. Dead And Dusted 1 feels like the top brass with this unique hit.
