Former Canadian PM Brian Mulroney has died aged 84. Among the prominent conservative heads of state of the 80s, he was swept into power in 1983 on a record landslide where his party nabbed nearly 75% of the seats. His diplomacy to the US memorably included duetting “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” with Ronald Reagan, and his overtures toward the Gipper eventually resulted in enaction of free trade laws between the countries. He was a vocal opponent of apartheid South Africa and implemented robust environmental policy, though his administration was rocked by division over Quebec and corruption scandals. His popularity cratered and he resigned in early 1993, leaving successor Kim Campbell to steer his party’s sinking ship into a loss of all but two seats that October.
