Peregrine Worsthorne

THIS PEREGRINE VERY ENDANGERED

British journalist Peregrine Worsthorne has denounced rumours of owning the Philosopher’s Stone, by dying aged 96. Leaving the Times who were uncomfortable with his pro-McCarthy views, Worsthorne joined the Telegraph. From 1961 to 1991, he held the positions of Deputy Editor or Editor itself at The Sunday Telegraph, and with friends among the great and mighty retained a great deal of influence throughout that time period. An imperialist, he made his name on support of the British Empire and denouncing the public’s “trust in socialism”. He supported Pinochet’s coup in Chile and called for a similar one in Britain, and would attack Margaret Thatcher for not being right wing enough. He was also well known for his staunch anti-gay views and strong support of Section 28. He was picked by 5 teams, including Apricot Crumble, Tomb It May Concern and Gobbing on Life. Fun fact. Worsthorne also lost a libel case as editor against then journalist and now broadcaster Andrew Neil over the use of prostitutes. Anyone watching the news today may twig how unusual it is for a newspaper editor to lose one of those.
