Emmerdale star Steve Halliwell has died aged 77. His scrappy flat-capped Zak Dingle was the pulse of the soap, making an unforgettable first impression getting into a bare-knuckle brawl with Ned Glover. He lost the bout, but won the audiences with his troublemaking. Dingle was planned just for that brief run, but proved popular enough to become a fixture and his unhinged violence was rounded out by a lovable side as his troubled family was developed. Halliwell himself had a rowdy upbringing – poverty, alcoholism, evictions – that added believability to many of Dingle’s struggles. The soaps theme teams gave him a berth and he was instead picked by “people I walked by on the street” theme Passing of the Passed.
