Stan Bowles

THE GAMBLER, HE BROKE EVEN

Football maverick Stan Bowles has died aged 75. The star player of Queens Park Rangers in the 70s, he helped take the team to second place in the Football League First Division during the 1975-76 season. He was equally remembered for his colourful antics on and off the pitch, with bouts of temper, boozehounding, and a gambling addiction that cost him some £750,000. His cult hero status has endured – indie rock band The Others wrote a song about him, and John Barnes has cited him as his favourite player. A 2015 Alzheimer’s diagnosis accorded him a similar cult status in the DDP, with a hinterland of 7-10 teams gambling on him to no avail year after year. Nine teams landed the winning bet this goaround, including drunkasaskunk, Going Green, and Statik Charge.
