TOYODA FACES DISASSEMBLY LINE

Former Toyota boss Shoichiro Toyoda has died aged 97. The son of founder Kiichiro, he presided over the company’s expansion into North America and promoted the Lexus and Prius brands. In case you’re wondering why the family surname is “Toyoda” rather than “Toyota”, the brand was originally marketed as “Toyoda”. The brand change happened shortly after the company’s 1937 founding, as one of the family members felt that “Toyota” looked and sounded better, and the kanji for it used eight brush strokes (a lucky number in Japan). Frail or cancerous gets nine points (an unlucky number in Japan).
