Far out man… I walked into this obit thinking psychedelic drugs guru Roland R. Griffiths was a 60s counterculture lad, but in actuality his research took place in the 1990s onward. He was already known for his groundbreaking research on caffeine when he started meditating regularly, which prompted a spiritual awakening and compelled him to study psilocybin. His research on magic mushrooms, including a test study that observed ordinary people taking the drug and having otherworldly experiences, prompted a renewed academic interest in using magic mushrooms to combat addiction, depression, and anxiety. He was 77 and held a colourful enough life you’d think there was a broadsheet obit in store for him, but as of this writing Reptile’s B Team has to settle for a Yahoo article posted before Griffiths’s death that was updated to include his death in the strapline.
