Michael Jayston

GRAVEYARD FOR THE VALEYARD

Respected actor Michael Jayston has died aged 88. He gained early repute for Shakespearean theatre and TV roles, as well as Tsar Nicholas II in Nicholas and Alexandra. A regular face on TV, he was Alec Guinness’s right-hand man in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the Doctor’s dark doppelganger the Valeyard in Doctor Who serial The Trial of a Time Lord, and Raquel’s antiques dealer dad in an episode of Only Fools and Horses. He also played James Bond for a BBC Radio 4 adaptation of You Only Live Twice, making him the only actor to play some form of both the Doctor and 007. Active up to his death, his death comes as something a surprise despite his age, and he was picked by three teams and jokered by Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, DIE.
