Business
German transportation mogul Klaus-Michael Kuhne’s claim to fame was being the richest person in Germany, having started out in the family business of Kuhne + Nagel. Said company was founded in 1890, shipping cotton and consolidated freight, but really hit the big time in World War 2 when they moved into the transportation of looted Jewish property to help fund the Nazis. Lovely.
Klaus-Michael only joined after all of that unfortunate business, and they put a nice memorial out the front of their new HQ eventually so can people just move on from the war crimes now? A huge part of his £39 billion net worth came from modern day sea and air freight too you know! Only Bucket Of Blood took a punt on the shipping magnate and it took a while for the QO to arrive but the Telegraph came through in the end, for ten points.
Media
Donald Trump continues to outlive many of his critics as we also say goodbye to journalist and second-wave feminist icon Gloria Steinem. She spent decades writing and campaigning for women’s rights, co-founding groups such as the National Women’s Caucus, Women’s Action Alliance and Women’s Media Center. Steinem endorsed Hilary Clinton for President in both 2008 and 2016, though Obama doesn’t seem to have taken it personally if the Medal of Freedom he gave her is anything to go by.
That she lived long enough to see both the implementation and overturning of Roe v. Wade strikes me as a cruel twist of fate, but she remained steadfast amid the wave of anti-liberal crusading going on all over right now, sticking with anger rather than despair. Not so angry are the five teams who had the activist on their list this year, scoring five points each.
Politics
Edouard Balladur served as Prime Minister of France from 1993 to 1995 during the presidency of François Mitterrand. Balladur was initially a key protege and ally of Jacques Chirac on the center right, agreeing to the appointment of Prime Minister once Chirac made clear he didn’t want the job under a socialist president. Said partnership ended spectacularly in 1995 when Balladur chose to run against Chirac in a failed bid for the presidency, and Chirac never forgave him or let him near front-line politics again. It only got worse for Balladur down the line due to his campaign benefitting financially from the Karachi affair, the protestations that all the money came from T-shirt sales and not dodgy submarine sales to Pakistan falling on deaf ears. He was acquitted of any wrong doing personally, so I’m sure he had no idea anything was amiss. It’s brown baguette time for him at 97, serving a hit for four teams and scoring ten as the joker for the world leader themed Dead Leaders.
Television and Radio
Last but far from least at 18 picks, comedy actor Richard O’Sullivan has finally given up the ghost at 82. He started out as a child actor in the 1950’s before going on to a healthy career in comedies such as Man About the House and spin-off Robin’s Nest, as well as a stint in the adventure series Dick Turpin.
As is sadly all too often the case with entertainers who start out their careers young, his personal life was a heavy one for alcohol and drug misuse. He was laid low by a stroke in 2003, putting him into the Brinsworth House retirement home for the rest of his life. Said stroke also made him a DDP mainstay from then on, though he went on to survive far longer than the biography written in his early sixties probably expected. His and Hearse benefit the most overall and squeak into the top 100, with comedy themed The Retched pong of Brit sit-com also reaching joint 32 on the theme board. Trojan Hearse also get their first hit of the year and score their joker for a week high 12 points.
