Joyce Randolph

BANG, ZOOM, STRAIGHT TO THE TOMB

The first Sulu-ing of the year is… not Jimmy Carter. Joyce Randolph was the last survivor of The Honeymooners, the influential, Flintstones blueprint 50s US sitcom starring Jackie Gleason’s lovable lug bus driver Ralph Kramden. Randolph played the proto-Betty Rubble, Trixie Norton, and was the most peripheral character of the core cast with the occasional surprise talent (pool hustling, a burlesque background). Trixie guaranteed her rerun immortality, though also proved a career albatross as she struggled to gain roles unlinked to the character. It was a proper “hamana hamana” surprise for me when I found someone from The Honeymooners was still alive in 2007, let alone in 2024, but one of these days the Reaper was gonna pow her right in the kisser. She was 99 and picked by eight teams, including joker points for Turn Off That Telly and Go to Bed!
