James Chance

NO CHANCE

No Wave saxophonist James Chance has died aged 71. He was a key figure of the brash genre as member of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, James White and the Blacks, and most notably James Chance and the Contortions. His cacophonous sax-playing was a trademark, as was a boisterous stage presence that staged fist fights with the audience – not even rock critic Robert Christgau was safe. His lineup longevity was correspondingly shaky, with Chance the only constant in his bands, but he kept trucking on and recorded with Debbie Harry along the way. Reports of recent ill health caught the Roving Eye of Musical chairs and The Policies Of Benjamin Netanyahu, and they now gain from the fatal contortions in his digestive system.
